We mentioned a few months back that billionaire NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg was due $76,000 in unclaimed funds, but it turns out he’s not the only high roller overlooking some cash. A recent Forbes.com article highlights a few other big dogs who are missing a few bucks:

Note to Yahoo! Chief Executive Jerry Yang.

Word is that you are trying to wring a few more bucks out of Microsoft for your struggling Web portal.

Maybe this will help: The state of California says you have $3,008.46 worth of unclaimed Microsoft dividend checks coming your way.

Yang isn’t the only billionaire in Silicon Valley who’s got a little unclaimed cash. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has $465.26 waiting for him from an insurance company. Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin never picked up $1,023.91 earned as a graduate student from Stanford University, in addition to $9.53 worth of dividends from The New York Times Company. Google’s other co-founder, Larry Page, has lost track of $262.26. Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison, who currently tops Forbes’ list of the best compensated executives, can hang onto a little more Oracle stock this year: he’s got $51.43 coming from the U.S. arm of Swiss insurer Zurich.

Of course those amounts are drops in the bucket for these billionaires, but these are exactly the types of unclaimed assets being discovered by average citizens every day. The article goes on to note that these revelations come as California continues it’s attempts to reunite people with $5.3 billion in CA unclaimed cash, which we’ve discussed here a number of times. As law makers continue to salivate of these monies State Controller John Chiang still appears to be on the side of the folks, trying to reconnect 8.7 million Californians (even billionaires) with their share.

The battle for lost assets in California is all the more reason for residents of that state to get moving on their search for missing money. Mr. Chiang can’t do it all, and he’s fighting with politicians who can’t wait to get their hands on your cash, so stop procrastinating and get your unclaimed property search started today.

The state of Missouri is seeking the rightful owners of MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in unclaimed money. Last year, more than $22 million in Missouri unclaimed money was returned to its rightful owners, and that’s only the beginning!

As with most states, the folks have trouble accepting the reality of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars owed to them. This is one of the primary reasons that despite tens of millions of dollars in unclaimed money being returned, that’s just a fraction of how much is yet to be claimed.

KMBC in Kansas City recently explored Missouri unclaimed property, with a special look at unclaimed assets in abandoned safe deposit boxes. KMBC’s report ended:

Flink reported that the Web sites are constantly updated. Last year, Missouri gave back $22 million to rightful owners. In Kansas, more than $11 million was given back. But Kansas has $188 million still unclaimed.

That’s almost $200 million in unclaimed funds yet to be returned in Kansas, and although they don’t provide a dollar amount, we can safely assume that there’s even more in Missouri, based on the fact that MO gave back twice what Kansas did last year, and the amount returned is always tiny in comparison to what isn’t claimed.

You’ve probably heard that the government is currently holding billions of dollars, owed to citizens from things like old bank accounts, forgotten tax refunds, veterans benefits, and stock dividends.  There are quite a number of other reasons why the government might have money, waiting to be claimed by you, but did you know that you might be owed unclaimed money from your old jobs?

After learning that there is no such thing as a “national unclaimed money database” (DON’T believe a site that claims there is), and discovering all the resources for searching for missing money in each individual state, I search the names of a few family members, and found that many of them were owed undisclosed amounts.

Beyond those few undisclosed amounts, I found a record for money owed to my cousin Adam, and the details of the record revealed that it was from a major clothing retailer, found in malls across the country.  I scratched my head for a minute, before bursting out laughing when I remembered that once upon a time he picked up a few hours a week working there in order to get the employee discount.  It only lasted a few months, as he was working so much at his full-time job, and the money wasn’t good, it was all about the discount, which is probably why he forgot to pick up his last check!

That’s right, years after he left the part-time job he held solely for a discount on clothing, the small check he’d forgotten about, but was still owed, had been turned over to the state and was now listed in the state’s unclaimed records.

Now, every state has it’s own regulations, so I don’t know off the top of my head how long it takes before your former employers would have to turn money over to the state, but if you’ve had a lot of part-time jobs, summer jobs, or jobs while you were in school or had a lot of other things going on in your life, there’s a good chance you’ve forgotten about a check or two along the way!

If you think there’s a chance you’re owed unclaimed money in the form of payroll checks from a former employer, or for any other reason, you owe it to yourself to search now, and you owe it to yourself not to waste money paying “per search” or paying “finders fees”.  UnclaimedMoney.net teaches you how to do it yourself, and you’ll only pay one low fee for LIFETIME ACCESS!
